When Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

Maintaining optimal oral health requires commitment. It also comes with challenges. Sometimes, "addition by subtraction," in the form of tooth extraction, is actually the best option to help you along in this quest.

Despite an intimidating reputation, it's important to note that tooth extractions are routine procedures that can alleviate your oral pain, prevent infection from spreading, and protect you from major dental issues in the future.

Today, we're exploring tooth extractions, from the conditions that necessitate them to the detailed process of removing an irreparably damaged or decayed tooth.

Why Would I Need a Tooth Extraction?

Several dental issues can lead to tooth extraction. Here are a few clear signs that one (or more) of your teeth needs to go!

  • Tooth decay has advanced beyond the point of repair and is now threatening adjacent teeth.
  • Advanced gum disease that's progressed to the point of severe infection and caused a tooth to come loose or fall out altogether.
  • Wisdom teeth, or "third molars," are "impacted," meaning they can cause severe pain, infection, overcrowding, or misalignment.
  • Irreparable breakage stemming from direct impact or trauma.

The Full Tooth Extraction Process

The tooth extraction process involves several specific steps and calls upon your dentist (in this case, me) to employ specialized equipment and techniques to ensure a comfortable and effective procedure. Here's a breakdown:

  • Evaluation and consultation. X-rays and a physical assessment to determine whether extraction is necessary.
  • Anesthesia. A subsequent appointment dedicated to the extraction begins with the administration of local anesthesia. This offers the dual benefits of minimizing discomfort and creating a more comfortable working environment for the dental care team.
  • Tooth removal. Once you're comfortably sedated and numb, using special tools, we will gently and gradually work your tooth loose in its socket until it can be removed. This process typically takes less than an hour.
  • Post-procedure care. After your extraction, we will review a detailed post-procedure plan for managing and minimizing any pain or swelling, discuss temporary diet alterations to allow for proper healing (no excessively hard, jagged, spicy, or hot foods or drinks), and schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your recovery.
