Tips for a Successful Recovery After a Tooth Extraction

Tooth extractions are an unfortunate necessity in dental care when a tooth is broken, decayed, or infected beyond repair. On the bright side, an extraction relieves pain in the short term while eliminating the long-term risk of damage spreading to surrounding teeth.

Conversely, the removal of a natural tooth is generally seen as the last result. This is due not only to the invasiveness of tooth extraction but also the loss of the support the natural tooth once provides to the jawbone and facial muscles.

What to Expect After a Tooth Extraction

It is perfectly normal to experience certain types of discomfort in the aftermath of tooth extraction, including pain and swelling, stiff jaw, and some bleeding. However, most of these symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter medication, ice packs, and gauze.

Tips for a Successful Recovery After a Tooth Extraction

In addition to the icepack/OTC pain med/gauze combination, there are steps that can help with post-extraction recovery:

1. Watch what you eat –For a few days after an extraction, stick to soft, easy-to-chew foods like soup and mashed potatoes while avoiding crunchy, potentially sharp, and spicy foods.

2. Rest – For 24-48 hours after an extraction, avoid strenuous activity and get as much rest as possible.

3. Rinse with salt water – Rinse gently with warm salt water to keep the extraction site clean and prevent infection.

4. Don't smoke – If you smoke, avoid smoking for as long as possible after an extraction.

5. Listen to your dentist – Everyone's recovery is different. Your dentist will provide you with specific post-procedure instructions for caring for the extraction site and regarding what medications to take.

Above all, listen to your body. If you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection like fever or persistent swelling, your body is telling you something. In such cases, contact your dentist immediately.
