Root Canal vs. Tooth Extraction: Making the Right Choice for Your Dental Health

If you've been told you need a root canal, you probably have an infected tooth that is causing you pain. It could be painful to the point where you might think about having it removed, but here is our philosophy on root canals vs. tooth extraction.

At Advanced Dental Care, Dr. Young always wants you to keep your natural teeth for as long as possible. He only recommends tooth extraction as a last resort when all other treatment options have been explored.

It is important to understand that a tooth infection doesn't get better on its own, and if it's left untreated, the tooth could become unsalvagable and require an extraction. However, if you act quickly and seek treatment right away for a tooth infection, a root canal can eliminate the infected tissue inside your tooth, alleviate the pain you're feeling, and preserve your natural tooth, saving it from extraction.

What Happens During Root Canal Treatment?

Dr. Young numbs the affected tooth with a local anesthetic when you have a root canal. This immediately eliminates your pain and discomfort, ensuring that you don't feel anything throughout the procedure.

Next, he'll carefully access and remove the infected tissues from the inner canals of your tooth, ensuring that it's completely free of infection before temporarily sealing the tooth with a filling. Now, we'll give your tooth time to heal, and he may prescribe an antibiotic to help combat your infection.

Once your tooth has completely healed, we'll have you back to Advanced Dental Care to have Dr. Young rebuild and strengthen your tooth with a permanent filling or dental crown. Strengthening the tooth ensures you'll enjoy all the chewing functions you had before your tooth infection.
