Will Invisalign® affect my speech?

Invisalign® aligners, made from smooth, clear plastic, may initially impact speech as the wearer's mouth adjusts to the presence of the mouthpiece-like trays. The aligners are designed to fit snugly over the teeth. While they are custom-made for each patient and considerably more comfortable than traditional metal braces, they can initially alter tongue positioning and airflow during speech.

The required (fairly brief) adjustment period can cause temporary changes in pronunciation, particularly with sounds that involve tongue placement or airflow patterns. However, with regular wear, most individuals adapt quickly, and their speech typically returns to normal within about a week. It's important to practice speaking while wearing our Invisalign aligners to help your mouth acclimate to the new sensation.

As mentioned, compared to traditional braces, whose brackets and wires can affect speech significantly for the duration of orthodontic treatment, Invisalign aligners offer far greater comfort, less obstruction, and, overall, minimize speech impediments.

While there may be initial challenges, for most patients, any speech changes associated with Invisalign aligners are minor and temporary, with clear and natural speech returning with acclimation to wearing the aligners.
